What
if there was a coffee of incredible quality that was fairly priced to
the consumer, provided proper Living Wages to growers and actively helped
engage redemption and also spread the Gospel? Land of a Thousand Hills
is excited for your church to start a Coffee Ministry and discover Rwandan
Specialty Coffee. A “Drink a Cup and Do Good!” Ministry Kit is the perfect
way to partner with a developing country and to begin to “Engage Redemption”
and drinking Specialty Coffee. Land of a Thousand Hills is partnering
with the Rwandan Church specifically to encourage reconciliation and forgiveness
throughout the country’s hardest to reach rural communities. Hundreds
of farmers, many whom live amongst their neighbors in an environment of
mistrust, are now working together at church sponsored community wash
stations as Rwandans recognize the potential rewards from growing Spcialty
Coffee.
Coffee co-operatives, consisting of scores of farmers that have only tiny patches of land to dedicate to Specialty Coffee are rewarded with prices based on the quality of their coffee – prices that are consistently higher than those recommended by the Fair Trade Organization. In order for farmers to demand higher prices we encourage them to consistently work to improve the quality of their crop, supporting a healthy and sustainable economy, an approach to solving poverty that won’t immeadiatley damage Rwanda’s infrastructure by paying over inflated prices for a low grade product.
In addition to paying Living Wages to farmers, Land of a Thousand Hills donates $1 from the sale of every 12 ounce bag of coffee to the Inyakurama - a Christian prayer and healing group that ministers to Rwandan Genocide widows of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. The women receive microfinance loans as they learn to become business people. As successful small business owners, they are contributing towards a functional economy and achieve independence on their own; without becoming dependant on “hand-outs.” As an Ambassador for the Rwandan Coffee Project you will not only introduce your congereagtion to a tangable, and fun ministry – you are empowering a nation by the simple act of drinking amazing coffee!
