Coffee co-operatives, consisting of scores of farmers that have only tiny patches of land to dedicate to Specialty Coffee are rewarded with prices based on the quality of their coffee – prices that are consistently higher than those recommended by the Fair Trade Organization. In order for farmers to demand higher prices we encourage them to consistently work to improve the quality of their crop, supporting a healthy and sustainable economy, an approach to solving poverty that won’t immeadiatley damage Rwanda’s infrastructure by paying over inflated prices for a low grade product.

In addition to paying Living Wages to farmers, Land of a Thousand Hills donates $1 from the sale of every 12 ounce bag of coffee to the Inyakurama - a Christian prayer and healing group that ministers to Rwandan Genocide widows of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. The women receive microfinance loans as they learn to become business people.
